A sandstone town at the foot of two canyons
Lyons is small, about 2,156 people (U.S. Census Bureau estimate, July 1, 2024), and it feels that way in the best sense. Edward S. Lyon settled here in 1880, the town was platted in 1882 and it incorporated in 1891.
The town grew around quarries of red Lyons sandstone, which was shipped to Denver for flagstone sidewalks starting in the 1880s. A National Register historic district still includes fifteen sandstone buildings put up by local craftsmen between the 1870s and 1917.
Locals call it the Double Gateway to the Rockies because US-36 and Highway 7 each climb a separate canyon toward Rocky Mountain National Park.
What the 2013 flood means for buyers today
In September 2013 a historic flood hit Lyons hard, and the town has since rebuilt housing and public spaces. For buyers, that history makes two things worth checking on any home near the North or South St. Vrain: the current floodplain map for the address and the cost of flood insurance. Ask for both before you write an offer.
