Named for a boy who got better

Harvey J. Parish platted Johnstown in 1902 and named it for his seven-year-old son John, who was recovering from a ruptured appendix. John did recover and later served as mayor from 1929 to 1934. You can still tour the Historic Parish House and Museum, a 1914 Craftsman bungalow Harvey built.

A 1911 fire burned the wooden buildings on west Main Street, and they were rebuilt in brick, which is why downtown looks the way it does today.

Between Fort Collins and Greeley

Johnstown has about 20,639 people (U.S. Census Bureau estimate, July 1, 2024), up from 17,303 at the 2020 census. Fort Collins and Greeley are each about 15 miles away and Loveland about 20, by I-25 and US-34. The town sits in both Weld and Larimer counties, so check which county assessor handles the address.

Thompson River Ranch is a master-planned area with a pool, clubhouse, disc golf and trails. Thompson Crossing has metro districts. Old Town, near Charlotte Street, has early 1900s bungalows close to Main Street.
