From coal camp to one of Colorado's fastest-growing towns
Firestone was established in 1908 and named for Ohio investor Jacob H. Firestone, who helped start the Firestone Coal Company. With Frederick and Dacono, it's one of the Tri-Towns that grew up around early 1900s coal mines in Weld County.
The growth since then is hard to overstate. Firestone had fewer than 2,000 people in 2000, 16,381 at the 2020 census and about 19,396 people (U.S. Census Bureau estimate, July 1, 2024) now.
Trails, lakes and the old rail bed
The old coal-rail bed is now the 12-mile Firestone Trail, which ties neighborhood parks to the St. Vrain Legacy Trail. St. Vrain State Park sits just outside town and is a favorite for birdwatching, including bald eagles.
If you're looking at newer areas like Barefoot Lakes or Neighbors Point, plan on a metro district line on the tax bill. Historic Firestone and the Saddleback area near the golf club give you an older-home option.
